An old asymmetric  game with many names that peaked during the Viking age before falling before the titan that is Chess. 

The King - the black piece - must escape to the one of the four corners on the board before he's surrounded on all sides and captured. Paths close and traps spring - but few other games makes it so abundantly clear that sometimes losses are required for victory.
